Potash solubilizing microbes (PSMs) are specialized beneficial microorganisms that can convert insoluble potassium compounds in soil into forms that plants can readily absorb and utilize. These include potent strains such as Bacillus mucilaginosus, Bacillus edaphicus, Bacillus circulans, and Frateuria aurantia, which are known for their superior potassium-releasing capabilities.
Several sophisticated mechanisms to transform insoluble potassium into plant-available forms
- Organic Acid Production: Organic acids such as citric, oxalic, tartaric, and gluconic acids, this lower the pH in the microenvironment around soil minerals, dissolving the mineral structure and releasing potassium ions.
- Chelation and Complex Formation: Consortium produce specialized molecules called siderophores and other chelating agents that bind to metals in the mineral structure.
- Biofilm Formation: Some of the bacterial strains in AGSO Microbial Fertilizer form biofilms on mineral surfaces. This direct contact between microbes and minerals enhances the efficiency of potassium solubilization.
Potassium is one of the three primary macronutrients essential for plant growth and development. Often referred to as the "quality nutrient,"
- Activates over 80 different enzymes involved in plant growth and metabolism.
- Regulates water uptake and loss through stomata, improving drought resistance.
- Enhances photosynthesis and the production of carbohydrates.
- Strengthens cell walls, improving resistance to pests, diseases, and lodging.
- Improves fruit quality, size, color, and shelf life.
- Increases protein production and overall crop yields.
- Enhances plant's ability to withstand environmental stresses like frost and heat.
